While Michael Bay delivered an all-out assault on the senses for over two hours with his Transformers movies, Beasts will run briskly.
The seventh entry in the Transformers series is upon us. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is aiming to expand on the brand’s lore and is looking to give us the first all-out robot war outside of Cybertron. Rise of the Beasts is helmed by Creed II director Steven Caple Jr. and follows the events of Travis Knight’s Bumblebee. There is still confusion on whether or not the continuity remains the same with the Michael Bay movies. Although, it has been said that the studio truly considers Bumblebee to be a reboot, so despite this film taking place in the 90s, it’s likely it will not lead into the 2005 original.
When Michael Bay capped off his run with Transformers: Age of Extinction and Transformers: The Last Knight, he delivered possibly his biggest endurance test on the senses with the most chaotic action clocking in at over two and a half hours with both. Collider now provides us with the confirmed runtime for Rise of the Beasts, which will be running at a brisk pace of one hour and fifty-seven minutes.
This comes as a bit of a surprise as it is a trend for big-budget, special effects-laden franchise extravaganzas to aim to be as epic as possible by exceeding at least two hours. Bay’s original entry in 2005 would come in at just over two hours and the man just kept pushing the limit by growing the runtime continuously with each new entry. However, Bumblebee, which saw the Autobot make friends with a new character, Charlie, played by the delectable Hailee Steinfeld, would actually come in at three minutes shy of Rise of the Beasts. However, it was a conscious effort to subdue the franchise to a lower-key outing by Bumblebee’s story without a huge population of Transformers warring with each other.
The trailer for Caple Jr.’s film showcases not only new robot additions but a war and peace battle between Autobots, Maximals, Predicons, and Terrorcons. However, an argument can be made that we have had six films spanning eighteen years with these characters and their war, which isn’t very intricate in their development.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts rolls into theaters on June 9.
